Overview

Take an in depth self-guided GPS audio walk through almost two thousand years of London's past by a local history teacher. The walk takes in over thirty important and sometimes overlooked sites, from a hidden Roman amphitheatre, to the original London Bridge and the Tower of London. Delve deep into London's history through its often hidden ruins and always colourful characters. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Itinerary

  • Dating from 1411, Guildhall is where the civic, political and commercial lives of London came together.

  • The London Stone is one of London’s least known treasures. For many centuries it was believed to be the stone of Brutus, killer of Julius Caesar, who supposedly brought it to London.

  • Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London. The Lord Mayor is not the same as the Mayor of London. The Lord Mayor is in charge of the City of London Corporation, which runs the portion of the city that sits inside the old Roman walls.

  • There has been a market on and off on this site for almost two thousand years!

  • The medieval London Bridge was built in 1176 and took 33 years and an enormous amount of money to build. The bridge was 8 meters wide, and between 240-270 meters long, and boasted 19 arches of different sizes.

  • The Tower of London is one of London's most iconic and significant historical sites. During Shakespeare's day, most Londoners thought that the Tower of London was built by Julius Caesar. That turned out to be wishful thinking on the part of the English.
