Ahhhh, the famous Scottish wilderness!
With thick walls of stone and tall tower turrets, the castles of Scotland have guarded the Highlands for centuries. Many were built for defense, helping kings and dukes establish their rule over the land, while others were lavish country homes, built more for style than practical defense. Several castles have seen bloody battles and turned the tides in epic wars.
Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch which crosses the Scottish Highland Boundary Fault, often considered the border between the lowlands of Central Scotland and the Highlands. The loch is 36 kilometres long and between 1 and 8 kilometres wide, making it Scotland’s largest loch by surface area.
Boasting six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Forth Bridge – affectionately nicknamed ‘Our Grand Old Lady’ – is one that Scotland proudly holds under its belt. Built by Benjamin Baker and John Fowler, the bridge towers over the Firth of Forth estuary and connects the villages of South Queensferry and North Queensferry.
