Cosimo I de Medici, Tuscany’s first Grand Duke, initiated the Uffizi project in 1560 to create administrative space for Florence (‘Uffizi’ means ‘offices’). He commissioned famed architect Giorgio Vasari, who added a secret corridor to the Pitti Palace (which you can visit today) and demolished other ancient buildings.
The Accademia Gallery is an essential stop for any visitor to Florence for one exquisite reason: Michelangelo’s David. One of the most celebrated works of the Renaissance, the fantastic details of this sculpture, from David’s sinewy arms to his steely gaze, are well worth the queues.
Florence’s Palazzo Pitti is today one of the biggest museums in Italy and a favorite stop for the city’s countless visitors. The Palace was built by the rich Florentine banker Luca Pitti and is a grand Renaissance building that dates back to 1458.
Standing tall amid the iconic city skyline is the majestic Florence Cathedral (officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) and its red-tiled cupola. A symbol of this glorious city and marked by its Gothic beauty, no trip to Florence is complete without entering its hallowed bronze doors.
The Boboli Gardens can be considered an open-air museum hosting a great collection of sculptures, dating back to the 16th and the 18th centuries, with some Roman antiquities.
