Born in 1761 Madame Tussaud, previously known as Marie Gosholtz, started out modeling the philosopher and author, Francois Voltaire, and from there her destiny was sealed. She led a dramatic and somewhat turbulent life, becoming art tutor to the sister of King Louis XVI and living at the Royal Court in Versailles, before being imprisoned during the French Revolution.
