Why the crazy name? The museum is named after art collector Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, husband of Carmen Cervera and son of the first Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza. His private collection, initially encompassed sculptures, tapestries and paintings by both old and contemporary art masters. It was the second largest in the world, after the collection of Queen Elizabeth II of England.
How many Mona Lisas are there? Of course, you’ll be familiar with Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece at the Louvre in Paris, but the Prado in Madrid also has a painting of the same woman that looks remarkably like the original. For a long time, people believed this fresh-looking painting was one of many later copies, but the truth is more interesting.
Also known as the Queen Sofia Museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía of Madrid is dedicated to art from the late 19th and 20th centuries.
