Walking / Subway Historical City Lesson - AMAZING. I learned so much!

874duncank, Jan 2026

For this tour, I selected the walking-and-subway option (approximately four hours) to experience São Paulo in an authentic, everyday way. Danilo was attentive to my interests from the outset—particularly historical architecture—and curated a thoughtful and well-balanced tour. Highlights included the Monastery of St. Benedict and the Banespa Building, (I'll always call it that now!) with clear explanations of their historical and architectural significance. We explored key sites in the historic center such as Sé Square, the Martinelli Building, and the Municipal Theatre, as well as Luz Station* whose origins reflect São Paulo’s late-19th-century expansion driven by coffee, rail, and immigration. Together, these buildings illustrate the city’s rapid transformation into an economic and cultural center. Danilo also contextualized the work of influential architects such as Ramos de Azevedo and Victor Dubugras, connecting architectural styles to key periods of civic ambition and modernization. Access to rooftops with panoramic views further reinforced an understanding of the city’s immense scale and layered urban development. Throughout the tour, Danilo provided strong historical context, including São Paulo’s Indigenous origins and the role of the Tietê and Tamanduateí rivers in shaping early settlement and later urban growth. His command of dates, facts, and broader historical context was consistently clear and well balanced. Overall, the tour was informative, engaging, and exceptionally well delivered. I came away with a deeper understanding of São Paulo’s history and architecture, and a genuine appreciation for the city’s complexity and evolution. Thank You Danilo!

Sao Paulo Metro

132aldapocas, Nov 2025

I booked a tour to the city of São Paulo by metro accompanied by a private guide, this Service provided by the travel agency Viatur, and the guide went to Deborah. I rated this post with 5, for availability, and kindness of the guide, added to professionalism and culture

A Briliant afternoon in Sao Paulo

rom8, Oct 2025

We met with Doris at the Museum of Art on Avenida Paulista and ahe introduced herawld warmly. She gave us a comprehensive introduction into the area and greater Sao Paulo which was very interesting as we had never really known that Sao Paulo was the birth place of Brazil. Doris took us to the Japanese area which was both interesting and so unexpected to find this in Sao Paulo let alone Brazil. We proceeded to the amazing Cathedral which we went inside and sat in for a while to rest but also admire the architecture. Doris was kind enough to take us to a cafe where we could buy some local coffee. She farewelled us and waited for our uber to arrive which was very caring and I can not recommend Doris enough. Doris also went out of her way to check in with us in the evening to check on my mum who struggled littlw with her bad knee which was very caring. Overall the tour company Gregtur Tourism was amazing and great to have booked with and even though it was booked via viator the communication from the company is fantastic.

Itinerary

  • Paulista Avenue

Kick off the tour walking through the fascinating Paulista avenue. A place that is sure to impress you not only with its appearance, but also with its much rich history that may seem common in the eyes of some, but in the company of an expert tour guide can be mind-blowing.

    45 minutes
  • Praca da Liberdade

The second stop is at the Liberdade subway station (Japanese area), where every Sunday takes place the Art, Craft and Culture Fair. In Liberdade, tourists can try typical Japanese as well as other eastern countries treats, talk with exhibitors and vendors and learn a little about their cultures. South Korean Melona ice cream is a must-try dessert.

The neighborhood commerce is quite quirky, makeup shops, gifts, decorations and food markets. Entering a local market is such a program with different foods, mints and chips that tourists will love to taste.

Neighborhood lighting poles catch tourists attention and characterize the region for its beautiful Japanese style lamps.

    45 minutes
  • Catedral da Se de Sao Paulo

From Liberdade, walk through some of the most historically city sights such as “Sé Cathedral, “Pátio do Colégio”, “Tea Viaduct”, “Matarazzo building”, the Municipal Theater, to finish it up at Republic Square seeing some striking architectural symbols of São Paulo. Then go to the subway station to catch the train to Luz Station.

    45 minutes
  • Estacao da Luz

Over the past century, the station has become a gateway for millions of immigrants, from where they came by train after they arrived in Brazil at the port of Santos. The mass wave of immigrants upgraded the then small town of São Paulo to an important metropolis along the 20th century.
