There has been a market on this site since 1788 and its official name is the Princes Street Market. The reclaiming of marshy lands strongly influenced the development of the market. The channels in between were in - filled to form many of today’s st reets such as St Patrick’s, Grand Parade and Princes Street, proving ideal in forming the market.
The street once formed a curving part of the River Lee and was initially turned into a canal, alongside which quays and sh ops sprang, until, in 1780, it was completely filled in to form the street it is today.
The Cork Butter Museum is located in the building that used to house the Cork Butter Market.Opened in 1770, it became the largest butter exc hange in the world and traded for 150 years, exporting Cork butter worldwide and bringing great wealth to the city.
Shandon district of the city, is one of Cork’s most famous landmarks, the pepper pot like st eeple of St. Anne’s Church, which at a massive 170 feet has continued to dominate Cork’s skyline since 1722
St Fin Barre is the legendary Patron Saint of Cork, who arrived in the seventh century and built the monastic set tlement at the mouth of the River Lee, which became an important portal from county to city.
Elizabeth Fort was built in 1601, following Queen Elizabeth I’s order for five star - shaped forts to be built outside the defence walls to protect the coastal towns of Ireland.
