Fantastic day out but you'll need more than one visit.

mabe21678, Sept 2025

First time we have visited Shrewsbury Prison and who what an experience from the polite staff to the education of the going round the prison at your own pace. I was amazed at what facts and information I learnt a lot by asking questions with a young man and lady give or take a few years lol. We were approached by an officer called Malcolm and a lady called Sarah which was polite professional and couldn't offer more, from feeling welcome to asking questions and being shown so of the prison was great, well done to these two people willing to give their time and knowledge to people is just amazing. The reception staff were great and talkative which was nice and was willing to answer any questions you had, with being disabled a young lady escorted me a different way to avoid the steps that the scooter couldn't deal with It has a canteen which was nice and comfortable but on the review I have decided on 4 stars because we weren't very happy with the selection of food and cakes they offered. The prices were astronomical and in my opinion was too expensive I understand the places you visit expect to pay more but there should be a cut off point. Sausage roll nothing special 5.00 Small basket of fries 3.00 Hot chocolate 3.00 small piece of home flat breads 3 pounds odd I wouldn't recommend eating there because the menu lacks a selection of food and choice and the cafeteria lady didn't seem to be over pleasant. Apart from that a great day, finally signage to the prison is poor and parking in the prison grounds is lack of signage so you pay extra thinking it's the carpark opposite the prison. The big let down is considering the history of the prison it has no book to purchase that is just associated with Shrewsbury Prison. Recommendation's Sound playing by prisoners would give a great experience and map improvements could be better. Well done to all we will visit again well impressed ????

Good but could be better

It was interesting in that this was an active prison up to 2013. Yes it had some notable inmates it also conducted executions. We enjoyed it and our granddaughter was fascinated by it so 2 hours went very quickly. 2 adults and an 11 years old £40 felt a bit much to be honest but I’m sure such an old building takes a lot of expense to run. Some of the information displayed showed their age and it was apparent the lack of investment and upgrading of the visitor experience. Ricky Tomlinson (Actor) was incaserated at Shrewsbury - his conviction was later quashed by the High Court. A video interview of him saying what it was like being in prison from the cell he stayed in would have been amazing. Sadly they don’t have anything like it. This could be upgraded with a little imagination and investment into a top attraction and not something that could turn sadly into decline. I still give it a 4 because this needs to be seen just hope my comments provoke the owners to do something

A very different experience

Thought I would visit as seen it recommended online . Was definitely something different and there was a distinct atmosphere in the place. Was given a map with numbered sections but was a bit confusing trying to follow , would have been better if there was an actual route to follow and if the buildings had the corresponding numbers on . The execution room was quite harrowing and wouldn’t advise taking small children .

Fantastic building.

Our second time to visit here. So much history with this jail. Lots of places and rooms to explore. We opted for the self guided tour so went at our own pace. Not much parking at the jail, so best to park in one of the main car parks. Abbey car park is in walking distance and along the river to the jail. The Abbey is worth a visit too.
