A Disappointing Experience

sandrasX7342LJ, Aug 2025

This tour was a disappointment. Our tour guides were not very engaging or knowledgable. The only way to see the bioluminescence was to have a tarp draped over you and to stir the water around with your hands. You could barely see any. I do not recommend this tour- if you really want to see them, chose a different tour on the island. Or better yet, go to Mosquito Bay were they are see much better.

Response from Host, Aug 2025

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations. Our goal is to provide memorable and engaging tours for all guest, sadly for you this was not. Bioluminescence visibility can vary due to natural factors like moonlight, weather, and water conditions, and we understand how that can impact the overall experience. We do our best to prepare our guests for these possibilities and to create the best conditions possible with safety and environmental care in mind—including the use of tarps, which is a common practice across the island. We will also be reviewing your comments about our guides to ensure we’re providing the level of enthusiasm and knowledge we pride ourselves on. Your feedback helps us improve, and we sincerely appreciate it.

CONSIDER THIS YOUR WARNING

alexcH5680XJ, Jul 2025

DISREGARD ANY GOOD REVIEW - I genuinely do not understand how anyone has had a good, or safe, experience on this tour. Upon arrival, we smelled the wretched Lagoon water before we even pulled into the parking lot. Little did we know, we would be sitting in a small puddle of this wretched sludge in the seat of our kayak throughout the entire tour. (Ladies, bring a change of bottoms). The kayak experience was incredibly arduous and dangerous, taking place in the pitch darkness, through narrow mangrove tunnels, and little to no guidance. (A suggestion for future tours would be to give a flashlight to each kayak! It was very hard to navigate and see the way in the darkness.) Many crashes took place along the way. I deeply feared for my safety, and the safety of others. It was clear the rest of the group felt that way as well, due to the screaming. As we made our way into the middle of the lagoon, we were not able to see any bioluminescence. It was incredibly underwhelming, and we felt like we had struggled to get there for nothing. The stars were beautiful to look at, I must say! That was the highlight. The guides were very, very nice, and informative, and I do not want to blame them. I think they did a great job with what they had, I just think the overall experience was not a safe one. When we got to our final destination, we were lined up kayak to kayak and given a very large, disgusting, putrid, possibly moldy tarp to drape over everyone. We were told to put our arms into the water, swish it around, and look for traces of bioluminescence on our hands. I felt like someone was playing a sick joke on us. We all just looked at each other in confusion, disappointment, and complete, utter shock. Because what the hell was that? No bioluminescence. And, where were we supposed to dip our hands when we were shoved kayak to kayak? It was brutal and senseless. After we couldn't see the bioluminescence, the guides let us paddle around freely for a short bit of time without any directions on how to return to them, and after a short while of being left to our own devices, many people in the group, my friend and I included, began to panic because we did not know where our guides were or how to return to them or when we could expect to head back. We even called out their names to try to find them, and didn't receive a response. It was very scary. On the way back, there were tarpon splashing in the pitch black darkness, and kayakers were visibly panicked. The kayak back felt long and challenging, and defeating. Overall, I would not recommend this experience. Unless you find it pleasurable to endure trials and tribulations while feeling mildly humiliated and slightly insane. It felt more like a social experiment than an experience. I can not believe I paid for this. It was not a laid back, enjoyable experience. It felt really unsafe and scary and difficult, with seemingly no reward.

Awesome guides and educational fun experience

Guides put up with my group’s antics and made it fun and educational despite diminishing phytoplankton populations

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Thank you so much, Drew, for your fantastic review! We’re so glad you and your group had fun with us out on the water. Our team always enjoys bringing some laughs and learning to the adventure—even when nature doesn’t glow as brightly. Your appreciation means a lot, and we hope to welcome you all back again !

Unsafe and Overcrowded – Not Worth the Risk

C7524JYcats, Jul 2025

After going on the Eco Adventures bioluminescent kayaking tour in Fajardo, I feel compelled to warn others—not just about the underwhelming bioluminescence, but about the serious safety concerns that overshadowed the entire experience. This tour takes place in complete darkness, through a very narrow, heavily crowded mangrove tunnel, without any maps, lighting, or clear directional guidance. While the company emphasizes that the darkness is necessary to see the glow, the logistics of the experience were reckless at best. On our return trip, another large group from a separate tour company was entering the tunnel at the same time—coming with the current, at a much faster pace, in the opposite direction. What followed was pure chaos. My husband and I were hit multiple times by other kayakers, many of whom were inexperienced and visibly panicked. There appeared to be no coordination between companies to ensure that one group passed safely before the other entered. This lack of basic communication created an incredibly dangerous and stressful bottleneck. Guests were colliding with each other, scraping against branches, and shouting instructions in the dark with little support from guides who were trying their best to manage the confusion. Despite the company’s claim that this is an “immersive, nature-based tour,” that should not excuse poor planning or a lack of safety protocols. Allowing large numbers of inexperienced kayakers to navigate tight, pitch-black tunnels without structured group management is not immersive—it’s irresponsible. If nature is the draw, then tour operators should respect it enough to limit traffic, reduce overlap between groups, and make the experience safer for everyone. Also worth noting: when customers express disappointment, the company’s response is not to empathize, but to defend themselves. That in itself says a lot. Rather than acknowledging genuine concerns, they double down and imply that guests just didn’t read the fine print. That’s not accountability—it’s deflection. To be clear, the guides were wonderful and clearly doing their best. This review is not about them—it’s about a system that prioritizes volume over safety, and vague disclaimers over transparency. If you’re considering this tour, I urge you to think twice. It’s not just a disappointing experience—it’s a potentially dangerous one. The risks are real, and frankly, not worth the price or the stress.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Dear CS , We are very familiar with your feedback, as you’ve chosen to post similar negative reviews about our company on multiple platforms. While we are always open to constructive criticism, we must address the repeated and inaccurate claims you continue to make—particularly when they misrepresent not only our operations but also the truth about the safety and integrity of our tours. We would like to clarify several key points in response to your review. Our operation is fully licensed and regulated by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA), which has authorized all tour companies—based on environmental and safety evaluations—to operate two tours per evening, six days a week. These are not random or careless decisions—they are part of a structured, government-monitored system to protect both the guests and the environment. The claims in your review regarding chaos, lack of safety, and dangerous conditions are simply not reflective of reality. Eco Adventures has been operating bioluminescent kayak tours for over 18 years, running multiple tours every week, year-round, without any record of serious accidents. Our guests are given proper instruction and are always accompanied by professional, trained guides. The kayaking route, including the mangrove channel, is a unique and natural setting—challenging for some, yes—but that is exactly why we take so much care in guiding and organizing every group responsibly. We are proud of our staff, who work hard every day to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Our team always puts guest safety first and strives to handle every situation professionally and respectfully. That said, nature-based tours inherently include elements of unpredictability, and a certain level of personal responsibility is necessary. Furthermore, your statement implying that our company dismisses genuine concerns is unfounded. We take all guest feedback seriously and respond respectfully, including to yours. However, when someone continually returns to post reviews with the clear intent of casting our company in a negative light—especially after we’ve already provided clarification—it crosses the line from constructive feedback into deliberate defamation. To future guests reading this: Eco Adventures is committed to providing a safe, memorable, and environmentally respectful experience. We are proud of our long-standing reputation and the thousands of happy customers who’ve joined us over the years. Our commitment to safety and guest satisfaction speaks for itself. We truly wish you the best, but we will not continue to entertain repeated, misleading, and damaging claims. Sincerely, Eco Adventures

Itinerary

  • After Check-in guides gather group for a brief session covering basic kayaking, rules of the road, and the importance of keeping a minimum disturbance of the environment of the bioluminescent lagoon.

Then we launch our kayaks and head for a hidden opening in the mangroves in northern end of the beach. Upon entering the mangroves, we follow a channel for a mile leading to Laguna Grande.

Once we enter the laguna your guides gather group for an informative talk about: This unique ecosystem, the flora, fauna, and sea life that inhabits the lagoon, and historical notes.

Our bay is very delicate as it depends on the ecosystem surrounding it. Due to climate changes and other factors the bioluminescent bay can reduce its fluorescent lights . This means that the glow is not guaranteed . This all depends on natural or human causes that can affect the organisms. Our company is not responsible for these changes as we do our best to provide a unique experience for all who visit the island.
