Begin the day with hotel pickup, available from Girona, in a private vehicle. First, explore Girona’s old Jewish quarter, also known as the ‘Call’ and considered one of the best-preserved of its kind in Europe, remaining much as it was up until the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
Soak up the atmosphere as you wander winding medieval streets, poke around in unique shops, and take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Also visit the town’s Museum of Jewish History (admission included) to learn about the area’s past and notable former residents, including prominent kabbalist and Jewish scholar Nahmanides.
In the afternoon, continue on to the town of Besalú, crossing the Fluvià River by way of a distinctive Romanesque bridge. Hear about Besalú’s long Jewish heritage, traces of which are still being uncovered today, and learn why the town was named a site of great cultural and artistic importance in 1966.
See the remnants of a 13th-century synagogue and visit the town’s most esteemed cultural treasure—an underground Mikveh (ceremonial bath) that dates back to the 12th century. Imagine what life was like during medieval times with a stroll through the picturesque narrow streets marked by stone steps and archways, and browse handcrafted goods at small local shops.
The full-day discovery tour concludes with drop-off back at your original departure point in the afternoon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Miguel. He was very knowledgeable and made the trip interesting and fun for both teens and adults. I would highly recommend this tour! It is impossible to get a sense of the robust Jewish history of Spain without a guide.

The tour was fascinating! Well worth it for sure. Our guide Miguel was amazing. He is very knowledgeable, he had a very deep, extensive knowledge of every aspect of the region. He grew up in Girona so it was a very personal tour. His knowledge of the Jewish history and philosophy was outstanding, he really put everything in perspective, and his particular interest in philosophy elevated the tour significantly, this was an amazing tour, and Miguel is an amazing guide!!!!!

This was an amazing tour for our two families who were traveling togther and truly a hightlight for everyone of our week in Spain. We were three adults, four teens and everyone was incredibly happy with this day. Girard was our tourguide and we couldn't have asked for anyone better. He related to every person in our group with ease and interest... and was so informative and knowledgable. It was a pure pleasure to spend the day with him! He truly seems to love his job and the information he has to share - and that is infectious in the best of ways! And the history itself is fascinating. I have spent much more time thinking about what I learned and the history I experienced on our one day in Girona and Besalu then I have from our five days in Barcelona. I can't recommend this tour enough. Truly worth the effort to get to Girona if you are staying in Barcelona.
