Overview

Karlovy Vary is the most famous spa town in the Czech Republic. It was founded around 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and Czech king Charles IV.

The city center is situated along the narrow valley of the Tepla River and is overlooked by high green hills. The colonnade and pedestrian zone are lined with breathtaking architecture of spa hotels. The most famous is the Grand Hotel Pupp featured in the movie Last Holiday; another well known hotel is the Hotel Thermal, which hosts the world-famous Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Karlovy Vary acquired international fame, thanks to the healing powers of the local mineral springs, of which there are around a hundred, going down to various depths with their temperatures varying from 30 to 73 degrees Celsius.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the spa town was a popular place of stay for the nobility as well as poets, writers, and musicians.

Great Tour!!!

Diontanese_M, Apr 2026

Tatiana was absolutely amazing. She was very knowledgeable of anything we asked, even outside of the history of Karlovy Vary. She was very prompt and went with the flow of anything we wanted to do. I would highly recommend this experience. 5 out of 5.

Response from Host, Apr 2026

Dear Diontanese and Ashley, thank you so much for having me and your kind words! It was a pleasure and honor to be in your company and to show you Karlovy Vary! Thank you again:-)

Karlovy Vary - decide worth a visit

margittoft, Jul 2025

We visited Karlovy Vary in July 25. It seems quiet and even though there are tourists, it was not overrun. It is a beautiful area where you can spend a few days. We walked the walk through the pedestrian street with a cup and tasted in 15 very different sources. Taken the small railway up on the viewpoints. Visited the spa which was open for outsiders and went for a walk in the nearby area (forest) and a walk along the fold. The last walk was filled with small stops where you could buy refreshments and try out playgrounds. I would say to taste the springs and the river walk appeals to young children. And can be done in a day. The springs, walks in the area and spa with sauna appeal to adults and teenagers. Last mentioned one can spend a day on, as you can lie out and sunbathing. Then there's for two days visit.

Beautiful Town

cjpetzel, Nov 2019

Karlovy Vary was a great side trip before hitting Prague. It's so beautiful - great energy and everyone is so welcoming. It's about 2 hrs. from Václav Havel Airport in Prague and about 1-1/2 hrs. from Prague, well worth visiting.
