This was an ok tour. A slow walk through the old streets. Stopped into the cathedral, past the residence and into the garden, then down to the old town. We received a historic framing and saw some little quirky items we would not have noted on our own. We were near other tour groups with guides with amplification and sometimes we got more from listening to these.

Natascha was our guide for the walking tour of Bamberg. It felt like walking around the city with a friend. We started at the Bamberg Cathedral and luckily, we were ahead of the cruise ship tours. We were able to see the church in a quiet setting and take our time looking around and taking in the history. Natascha was very respectful of the rules and gave us a quick overview before we entered, so we were well informed before we entered. She also helped us understand when Sunday services were being held so my cousin could attend prior to us leaving Bamberg. We then strolled around the city and learned so much about how the town formed and how the very famous Altes Rathaus ended up in the middle of the river. We were with a larger tour group and decided to take this tour while the group was touring one of the famous breweries in Bamberg. We were very happy we took this tour to learn about the town!

You will start your tour in front of the Cathedral, also known as the imperial cathedral of St. Peter and St. George. This historical landmark of Bamberg is one of the most visited touristic attractions from this lovely town, packed with art treasures. Inside the Cathedral you will admire the very impressive marble tomb of Emperor Heinrich II and his wife, the Empress Kunigunde or the tomb of Pope Clement II, the only papal grave in Germany. Another popular attraction is an equestrian statue known as the Bamberg Horseman that dates from the 13 th century and supposedly depicting the Hungarian king Stephen I.
Next enjoy a short stroll in the Old Court that once served as the Bishop's residence. This German Renaissance building was finished in the 16 th century and nowadays houses the Museum of History and St. Katherine's Chapel, used for wedding ceremonies. Pass through the "beautiful Gateway" admiring its depictions of saints and rivers to get into the inner courtyard for a better view of the half-timbered buildings. We continue our walking tour to the New Residence with splendid rooms and luxurious furnishings, a statement for the lavish life led by the local prince-bishop within its walls. Make sure not to miss the impressive Imperial Hall, the elector's room or the bishop's apartments. Before leaving, do visit the Rose Garden in the inner court, for some quite time and for a breathtaking view of Bamberg.
After a short pleasant walk through the Old Town, you will reach the Church of Our Lady, the only gothic church in Bamberg. Built at the end of the late Gothic period, the church is one of the most venerated places of worship in this area. Proceed to the Island district for a view of the Old Town Hall with its fascinating history. According to a local legend, the bishop refused to give the citizens of Bamberg the land they needed to build their Town Hall, so the people started throwing stakes and logs in the river Regnitz, creating in this way a small artificial island, on which they built their Town Hall.
