After pickup from selected central Vienna hotels or Vienna State Opera, it’s a scenic 3.5-hour coach ride to Hallstatt and its crystal-clear lake.
Start your visit with a guided walking tour, learning about the town’s 7,000 years of history and the salt mines that made the region rich.
In summer, follow this with a boat ride across the lake—a perfect opportunity to capture pictures of the town framed by mountains. In winter, visit the Hallstatt Ossuary, home to 1,200 human skulls dating back as far as the 12th century, many hand-painted and arranged in family groups.
There’s free time to explore and grab some lunch at one of Hallstatt’s restaurants and cafés (own expense) before returning to your hotel or the opera house.

The guide was very informative. Knew his details very well. Had a great time. It was a long day with a 4 hour drive either way, but still I would not want to stay in Hallstat so the option of a daytrip from Vienna was great.

We visited Hallstatt, Austria from Salzburg by car, and such an unforgettable experience it was! The breathtaking beauty of the snow-capped mountains and the serene lake created a picture-perfect setting, and the city nestling in was just magical. One of the highlights of the trip was the Hallstatt Skywalk. The panoramic views from this vantage point were absolutely stunning, offering a bird’s-eye view of the village and the surrounding alpine landscape. It’s definitely worth the visit! The Hallstatt Salt Mine Tour was another remarkable experience. The tour was well-organized, providing an insightful look into the history of salt mining in the region. The guided experience, complete with interactive exhibits and even a couple of fun slide inside the mine, made it an engaging activity. Both the Skywalk and Salt Mine Tour took about three hours, so plan your timing accordingly, especially if you're on a tight schedule.

First and foremost Hallstatt is beautiful. Also the journey to Hallstatt is breathtaking. In general, this trip is mainly for sightseeing and enjoying the picturesque view. If you are visiting during winter time, you should think about wearing snow shoes. Our tour guide Stefan was a great guy with humour who was more than willing to show us around and suggest us ways to pass our time.
Enjoy a guided walking tour through Hallstatt, learning all about Hallstatt's 7000-year history, the salt chambers that brought wealth to the region and the tragedies that took place here.
Boat tour across the lake Hallstättersee. (only in summer)
In the winter months only you visit the ossuary. The Bone House has been in existence since the 12th century. Kept in here, are 1200 human skulls. 610 of them have been hand-painted and arranged according to individual family groups.
Enjoy free time for lunch or a stroll around town to soak up the atmosphere of this tiny town.
Located directly in the centre of Hallstatt is the Evangelical Church, which was built as a house of prayer on the 30th October 1785.
One of the most beautiful sights in Hallstatt is certainly the market square of the UNESCO World Heritage town. Here the vacationer will find cozy cafes to relax, restaurants, a bar popular with young and old, hotels, and of course souvenirs.
