Overview

Mona Lisa is a popular lady, so don't miss the chance to get close to her without the crowds. On this last-entry Louvre tour just before closing time, explore the museum's essential sections with an expert guide, and then experience the beauty of the world-famous painting in peace right as the doors are closing. Accompanied by your expert guide, discover the palace's foundations at the moat, and then wander among the collection of Classical Greek statues to find the mysterious Venus de Milo and the triumphant Winged Victory of Samothrace. Marvel at the stunningly sculpted Cupid and Psyche and Michelangelo's Slaves, and get drawn into a pivotal moment in French history as you gaze upon Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People. Study the masterpieces of Caravaggio, Raphael, and da Vinci, admire the Romantic finesse of Géricault's The Raft of Medusa, and venture inside a room sparkling with Crown Jewels. To wrap up your Louvre Closing Time Tour, make your way to the Mona Lisa Room and enjoy the freedom to get as close to the small but monumental painting as you like, soaking up the beauty of the lady's ambiguous and endlessly analysed expression.

In August 1911, Leonardo’s masterpiece The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre and was missing for two years. The criminal was Vincenzo Peruggia, a handyman with a police record for robbing a prostitute. After hiding in a closet until the museum closed, he then removed the painting from its frame, rolled it up and walked out with it inside his coat.
