Narrow streets, hidden courtyards, magnificent passages - this is Leipzig's city centre. Already in the Middle Ages there were countless commercial buildings around the market square. Leipzig was the scene of colorful merchandise fairs: Twice a year, not only travelling traders came to town. Jugglers, quacks and charlatans also sought their fortune.
With the beginning of the sample fairs, at the end of the 19th century, Leipzig began a golden age. The merchandise was no longer sold on the market, but displayed in exhibition halls. Imposing buildings such as the Central Messepalast, Specks Hof or the famous Mädlerpassage were built in a short time.
Experience Leipzig’s rise from a market town to an important trade fair metropolis. Discover 500 years of trade and change in one of the most beautiful cities in Saxony.
