The former Jewish quarter was founded in the 14th century. For many centuries, Kazimierz was a place of coexistence of Jewish and Christian culture. The Jewish Ghetto in Podgorze was founded on 3rd of March, 1941. The ghetto covered an area of 20 hectares surrounded by a wall with three gates, fifteen streets, three hundred and twenty residential buildings. Death penalty was imposed for leaving the ghetto.

Oskar Shindler's factory, here, thanks to their work, 1,200 Jews survived World War II. Oskar Schindler, the owner of the factory, helped them. The movie Shindler's List was filmed here.
We will show you the factory from the outside.
This is where you will see a square full of empty chairs, 65 to be exact. Each chair symbolizes 1,000 Jews killed by the Nazis in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
