You will walk with historian Dr Lillian Cespedes Gonzalez* who studied all throughout her history undergraduate to her PhD in the city of Winchester. So you will get detailed explanations of the city from a historical view point as well as that local experience that makes Winchester a quaint, unforgettable place.
You will learn of the legends around some of the most iconic locations in Winchester. You will get to know notable characters such a Licoricia of Winchester of the stories of many bishops that work hard to give the city its hard earned reputation. And of course, you will dive into the Anglo-Saxon past following the footsteps of King Alfred of Wessex.
It is not every day that you visit the ancient capital of the kingdom with a medieval historian!
*Although Lillian delivers the majority of the tours the team has grown since 2021. Rest of the team are trained by her and historians/teachers/or history students of the university of Winchester. See our reviews*

Sam was our guide and was the perfect English gentleman!! We started at the West Wall and learned about the Roman gate and the wall that surrounds the old fortress town. So much to see from the tunnels to the gate to the recent 17th Century buildings. He was so engaging and obviously proud of his town! We were introduced to the Museum of the Green Jacket Regiment, (very famous) and the renown Winchester College. He left us at the start of the Main Street leading back to the train station. This town deserves more time and Sam’s tour is a great way to kick off a super experience!

Not as described. Tour details state that the tour will be done by Dr. Lillian Gonzales who got her degree in Winchester. The tour guide ended up being a college student--not Dr. Gonzales. An asterick in the description does say that most tours are done by her, but that one of her students may do the tour instead. Very misleading !!! Sam was our guide. He was very monotone, spoke very softly (hard to hear), and not very interesting. This tour does not live up to the many, many other Viator tours we have taken. Super disappointing !

Thanks for your message. We have already spoken with you about this issue and have taken your comments on board. It is advised on the description that in the 4 years we have been running tours the team has grown and Lillian has a team that has been trained by her and who have a background in history and/or teaching. Sam is coursing his Master's degree at the university of Winchester as a historian, and has previously been educated in London. He has delivered plenty of tours before and we have never had a problem, even with larger groups. In general we have never had a complaint about a situation like this as all our other reviews in TripAdvisor and viator suggest. We appreciate you didn't like the tour and for that we are sorry. We all have different tastes and perhaps this was not for you. We wish you the best in your future journeys.

Fantastic tour, covered a range of history and was the perfect length and circuit. Lillian was super knowledgeable and friendly and we could t have asked for a better tour guide
