Meet your guide and group of 12 or fewer at Exit C of Shichahai Subway Station. Then, set off on foot into the crooked alleys and courtyards of the city’s old hutongs—Beijing’s original residential districts.
Absorb the historical atmosphere and as you explore, learn about traditional daily life here, including local cuisine. Delve into the bustling lanes and enjoy up to five food stops to sample local specialties, heading off the beaten path to homes or small family restaurants that you wouldn’t find alone.
At each stop, sample a local staple and learn how it’s been made in the same way for generations. Dishes may vary, but expect to savor noodles at a private home, grill meat on open flames, and wrap ingredients into freshly made Beijing wraps.
Between tastings, chat with your guide over unlimited local beer, and finish with more beer—this time courtesy of a local brewery. Sample one of Beijing’s best craft beers at this hutong bar and enjoy a glass of your chosen brew.
Your tour finishes in the area when your guide departs, leaving you with directions back to your hotel or tips on exploring further.

Our guide was solid and the tour was good. We hate more food than I was expecting, so bring an appetite if you take this tour.

Amazing tours around one of the most iconic hutong in town. Great food, great company and great guide! My boyfriend and I loved it!

This was a great experience. Winnie was a great guide , fun, engaging and insightful. She made the night great , we went to different alleys around the city places that one couldn’t dream of visiting local family restaurants with such a great variety of delicious food. I recommend this tour as you wouldn’t be able to find these places or understand beijings rich culinary culture. Thanks Winnie

Our guide Winnie was amazing, so smart, witty, knowledgeable, her English is flawless and she knows so much about food! The food itself was delicious, we already tried some of the local dishes before joining the food tour but that had no impact on how much we enjoyed the food selection. The restaurants were great, little hidden gems, portions were adapted and at the end of the evening we felt full and happy :-) 100% recommend!
Begin your foodie journey at Shichahai metro station, where you'll meet your English-speaking guide ready to embark on a culinary adventure. Wander through 1.5 miles (2.5km) of Beijing's historic hutong alleyways, soaking in the city's past while taking delightful breaks to savor local bites.
This hidden gem offers rooftop views of Beijing’s historic bell tower and serves local hotpot in traditional copper pots and filled with a clear broth that highlights the quality ingredients. Thin slices of mutton and beef are quickly cooked in the pot and then dipped in a sauce made with sesame paste…plus grab a pint of local craft beer!
Run by a husband-wife team, this hidden restaurant specializes in spring pancakes, a dish traditionally enjoyed with family during Chinese New Year to celebrate the arrival of spring and a good harvest. Made fresh to order, they are eaten like a burrito and symbolize family reunion and togetherness.
When Beijingers want noodles, there’s only one dish we think about. In fact, we literally call it “Beijing Noodles” because all other noodle dishes are inferior. Visit the Yan family’s 100+ year old home, nestled deep inside a hutong courtyard, to try their made-from-scratch secret recipe.
