Itinerary

  • Rawson Square was named after the governor during the late 1860’s, Sir Rawson W. Rawson. It is here that parts of the Junkanoo festivities take place in the early morning of 26 December and 1 January ; an absorbing, colourful celebration and one of the Bahamas’ most renowned events.

  • On June 1st, 1942, after many years of substandard living conditions and inferior treatment, the city’s black population came together to protest the unfair race divide inherent in the Caribbean at that time. Until then, the vast majority of trade, commerce and political activity were in the hands of a small number of white residents known as the Bay Street Boys - whereas black citizens worked menial jobs for very low wages.

  • Initially used as a jail then almost 100 years later it was recommissioned and turned into a library and museum. The public service building also contains some pre - European artifacts which are exceedingly rare and, unfortun ately, often ignore

  • Queen's Staircase

  • The Fort was constructed at the latter stages of the 18th Century in conjunction with the building of the Queen's Staircase. Its purpose was to protect the city and harbour as it had impressive views over the area, but there are no documented events of any shots having been fired from Fort Fincastle.
