Begin your tour with a guide meet and greet at Friedrichstrasse train station. Ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg.
More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.
By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.
This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

We visited Sachsenhausen concentration camp with a tour booked through Get Your Guide. We met outside the train station in central Berlin and were greeted by Paul who accompanied us through the day. Paul was very informative and provided us with a rich historical foundation before we had even caught the train. The camp itself is about a ten minute walk from the station. There are different buildings around the camp and a lot of the foundations from the barracks still remain. I would highly recommend getting a tour as the context to what you see is hugely important in understanding what happened here. Paul captured us with his stories and knowledge and we learned so much. He was skilled in keeping a large group together and focused on the history. He really was superb at his job. A few tips: take food,a drink, and warm clothes. It is obviously a large open space so you are in the path of some quite biting wind at times.

Take train from our meeting point near S+U Friedrichstraße to Oranienburg. Oranienburg city is where the former concentration camp was constructed.
Ride with our guide to Oraninenburg S-bahn. Walk around the town and learn about how complicit the towns folk were and see where inmates used to work.
Sachsenhausen former concentration camp. Arrive at the former Camp and walk around the interiors of the first camp specifically built to be a concentration camp, not using existing structures.
See the old barracks, Prison cells and torture cells, Camp kitchen, Station Z (where mass executions took place), the gas chamber and crematorium. You'll also see the infirmaries and pathology center, as well as Tower A - the main guard tower.
