The Loire Valley, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is located just a short ride from Paris and is known for its magnificent castles, its picturesque villages, sophisticated cities and outstanding wines. There are over 300 castles in the Valley ranging from fortified castles of the 10th century to beautiful residences constructed during the 15th and 16th century.
Described by Balzac over lunch one day as "a facetted diamond set in the Indre", Azay-le-Rideau is one of the most famous châteaux of the Loire. Built in the early part of the 11th century, Azay-le-Rideau Castle was burned during the Hundred Years’ War, and later rebuilt during the reign of François I, by a wealthy financier.
In the early 1500s, Villandry castle is the last of the great chateaux built near the banks of the Loire during the Renaissance. Villandry’s originality lies not only in its avant-garde architectural design and it has the distinctive feature of being the residence of neither a king nor a courtesan, but of Jean Le Breton, Minister of Finance for François I.
