Explore the 'gruesome' side of Hexham, Northumberland and its long history. This accessible, circular, dog-friendly tour is a hidden gem and a great option for things to do in Hexham; particularly if you're looking for outdoor activities. Your journey begins at the Moot Hall in Hexham Market Place. We embark on a gentle, circular route, totalling approx 1 km, leading you through some of Hexham's most beautiful sights, rarely seen by tourists. Passing Hexham's stunning Abbey, Sele Park and Cockshaw before making your way back to the Market Place. Your friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming guide will bring the lesser-known history of this ancient town to life: Crime and punishment. Hexham's very own massacre. The centuries-long struggle to keep Hexham Abbey. The tanner's short life of pain, social exclusion. Hygiene in 19th century Hexham - how bad it was and the macabre contents of the drinking water.
