A beautiful market town, Hexham has a strikingly ugly past. Hear tales of gore and gunk that you certainly won’t find in the guidebooks on this walking tour led by a born-and-bred Hexhamian who spent eight months researching the town’s history—and even works as an official town crier. Hear about a market square massacre, brutal punishments, polluted drinking water, one of history’s toughest jobs, and more.

A fantastically gruesome and entertaining tour! Very much enjoyed by my parter and I and our 12yr old son. Helen is an amazing speaker. This and her enthusiasm means this really is an immersive tour. Highly recommended.

Everything about this tour was wonderful and really included some interesting points about Hexham that most tour guides would not know. 100% recommend this tour if your passing through it’s only one hour and at a absolutely amazing price of £10 per person!!

Really interesting tour. Lovely person, had a good laugh and joke with her. She had a really good knowledge of Hexham and was able to answer any questions we had.

Thank you very much for your review of the Gruesome Tour of Hexham. I’m delighted you enjoyed the experience. I hope you enjoyed your Italian meal too afterwards. I’m chuffed you enjoyed the relaxed, friendly feel of the tour too. I always aim to keep things personal, with a bit of humour along the way, while sharing Hexham’s history and encouraging questions throughout. Best wishes Helen

I booked the Gruesome Tour of Hexham as a Mother’s Day gift for my Mam, there was 3 of us (youngest being 11) and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Helen was absolutely brilliant. You can tell she genuinely loves what she does, and her delivery will engage anyone. We explored little hidden corners of Hexham that I’d never have noticed myself, with loads of small details that made the whole experience feel really special. I get bored and distracted super easily but I did not feel my mind wander or check my watch once, which is a big deal for someone like me. It’s rare to find something that keeps both adults and kids love, but Helen’s tour did. Can’t wait to book onto the next one!

I love sharing Hexham’s hidden corners and the little details that often go unnoticed, so I’m really glad that added to your experience. I look forward to welcoming you on another tour soon. Thanks again for your review and for choosing the Gruesome Tour of Hexham as a Mother’s Day gift. Best wishes Helen
We begin and walk through the ancient Market Town of Hexham.
We stop outside the stunning Abbey to hear of Hexham's most 'bloodiest' days and then walk through the garden to hear of repeated attacks from invaders.
(opportunity for Photographs)
We then walk together through the Sele park, discovering beautiful picnic spots.
Discover hidden gems and gear of one of history's most gruesome, toughest jobs.
Walk through the picturesque Hexham House grounds, a wonderful opportunity to take photos.
Our last stop ends back at the Market Place, to hear of Hexham's less 'prettier' side.
