Overview

Start your day with hotel pickup (if option selected), or make your way to River City Bangkok. Board your vehicle and make the journey north from Bangkok to Ayutthaya Historical Park. The old capital of Thailand (aka the Kingdom of Siam) from 1350 until 1767, Ayutthaya was largely destroyed by the Burmese and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

On arrival, set out on foot with your knowledgeable guide who leads you to notable Ayutthaya temples.

Marvel at the Buddha's head resting in the tree roots overtaking Wat Mahathat and visit other highlights including Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. All admission fees are included.

Complete your excursion with a riverboat lunch cruise on the Chao Phraya River back to Bangkok. Tuck into a delicious buffet lunch and enjoy views of temples lining the riverbank, such as Wat Arun.

Ayutthaya is a great stop for anyone that loves ancient history!

Tina_C, Apr 2025

Ayutthaya is a great stop for anyone that loves ancient history! It was a bit difficult to find the tour as there are multiple tour groups leaving from the River City building, but our guide "Donna" had things under control and let us know exactly what to expect. We even had a little time to grab snacks before the bus left. Our big tour bus only had about a dozen people and Donna was the star, clearly she is a seasoned professional, full of information and jokes, she made sure we had a great day! The stops at Ayutthaya were incredible! I could have spent all day there, but there is just too much to see... Donna knew exactly what to share and was extremely informative. Just the right amount of freetime to explore on our own too. Everything about this part of the tour was exceptional! However, the boat ride back to Bangkok was lackluster... it's decent and there was plenty of food, but just wasn't anything special, the same as any other Mekong river cruise (if you haven't done one before, then maybe this is for you). The end had nice views of Bangkok, but you can also see those from a long tail boat or water taxi in the city. In summary, Ayutthaya and Donna were great, but next time I'd skip the river cruise.

Fun temple sight seeing with lunch!

JOSEPH_A, Apr 2025

So much to see and do! Started with hotel pickup and greeting from our tour guide, Donna. She did an amazing job staying on point with each stop. Went from Bangkok on bus to Ayutthaya to visit the temples. Short stop after at some other temples then markets. Final ride was on a luxurious river boat with lunch included. Adventure took the whole day and was well worth it. Highly recommended if you want a trip outside of Bangkok to see the temples.

Great way to see Ayutthaya and return to Bangkok

Taryn_F, Apr 2025

Very nice tour to see Ayutthaya temples and sites. We drove out to site, during the drive our guide, Donna, provided information about the history and area. We had three stops. Donna provided information at each site and then provided some free time. At each stop, the information about restrooms was always shared which was greatly appreciated! After the sites, we then drove to our cruise boat for a 2.5 river cruise back to Bangkok. The buffet lunch was great with several options. Donna provided more information along the river. A really great tour and experience. Donna was fabulous!

Very unique and culturally enhancing. Learned about a culture which was limited to my knowledge. Good decision to visit.

Itinerary

  • Wat Mahathat

Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.

  • Wat Phra Sri Sanphet

Wat Phra Si Sanphet, also known as the "Temple of the Holy, Splendid Omniscient" was the holiest temple in Ayutthaya during the Ayutthaya period and until the city was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. It was the grandest and most beautiful temple in the capital and it served as a model for Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.

    Admission Included
  • Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit

Housing a large bronze seated Buddha image of 12.45 meters high (Phra Mongkhon Bophit), it was originally enshrined outside the Grand Palace to the east. It could be dated to the 15th and has a long history prior to being enshrined and to being covered nowadays with a Mondop. To know more, please ask our guide who will be delighted to provide you with further explanations.

    20 minutes
    Admission Included
  • Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam)

Wat Lokayasutharam is situated at Pratoochai District, behind the Ancient Palace and the Pratoochai Primary School, in the area 0f Wat Worapoh (Wat Rakhang) and Wat Worachettharam.

Wat Lokayasutharam is 800 meters from Wat Phra Mongkon Bophit. Wat Worachettharam and Wat Worapoh are also closeby. Nevertheless, we had quite some difficulty finding Wat Lokayasutharam, likely our otherwise good Ayutthaya map, was a bit off the mark.
